Living with Lupus: Shyaan's Story
Community Ambassador Shyaan Hasnain shares her thoughts on self-care and coping with lupus.
When I was diagnosed with lupus, I was not prepared for how it would impact my life. At the time, I was working in a fast-paced corporate environment in which my career trajectory took precedence over my health. My mornings were routinely characterized by shooting back pain and joint stiffness. Even the most mundane tasks, like putting my socks on, felt cripplingly exhausting. As an active and healthy person who enjoyed playing sports and traveling, it was frustrating to lose control over my body. But I was determined to push past the pain and continue to prioritize my career aspirations.
My symptoms worsened to a degree in which I was unable to walk. Many months and tests later, I was diagnosed with lupus. Initially, my diagnosis provided me with relief. There was an explanation for my rapidly deteriorating health. But I was filled with apprehension not knowing how this diagnosis would impact my health, career, and relationships. I had taken my health for granted, and realized it is an incredible privilege to be healthy.

Accepting my diagnosis was the first and most important step towards recovery. I initially struggled to accept the challenges and ambiguity that came with the disease because it would require me to make significant lifestyle changes and accept that there is no cure for this disease. The Lupus Foundation helped me come to terms with my diagnosis by connecting me with resources, crucial information, and a supportive community. I became a Community Ambassador for the Lupus Foundation to spread awareness of the disease, speak at events, and support community outreach and education. I was fortunate to be diagnosed at an early stage; however considering Lupus can be difficult to diagnose, awareness is critical to improving patient outcomes and quality of life. I also support the organization of the annual Walk to End Lupus every year.
My diagnosis has changed me. Living with lupus taught me to be ruthlessly honest with myself and others. My frustrations dissipate when I practice thoughtful self-care and set realistic goals. I’ve learned to better manage other’s expectations, which fosters effective communication and healthier relationships both professionally and personally. Living with lupus has made me more determined to achieve my goals, value my time, and ultimately, reinforced my desire to live my life to the fullest.
