A new study found that people with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who also had depression, anxiety and/or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) experienced higher rates of emergency department visits and hospitalizations than those without these diagnoses. These associations remained strong even after accounting for sociodemographic and clinical factors.
Researchers analyzed 2,160 adults with SLE enrolled in the nationwide All of Us Research Program. Nearly half (45%) had a diagnosis of depression, anxiety and/or PTSD, and participants were followed for an average of about three years to assess recurrent emergency department visits and hospitalizations related to SLE and other conditions. People with a mental health diagnosis had a 90% higher rate of emergency department visits and a 33% higher rate of hospitalizations, and also had higher combined rates of emergency visits and hospitalizations for both SLE-related care and non-SLE conditions.
The findings suggest mental health is a significant factor to consider in overall lupus care. Further research is needed to determine whether improving the recognition and treatment of mental health conditions can reduce acute care use and support better long-term outcomes for people with lupus.
