My name is Kim, and I’m a member of the Walk to End Lupus Now South Jersey Committee and the captain of Team KEEP IT MOVIN’. I was diagnosed with SLE and Transverse Myelitis in 2007, which left me paralyzed from the waist down, confined to a wheelchair, and told that I may not walk again. This devastating news changed my life forever. Through extensive therapy, faith, prayer, determination, and maintaining a positive attitude, in 2009 I went from a wheelchair to a walker, to arm crutches, and now using a cane.

After attending my 1st walk in Ocean City in 2009 and seeing so many people wearing purple and walking, I was overwhelmed with emotion, knowing that I was not alone. I was determined to learn more about the Lupus Foundation of America and to be a voice and support system for others living with lupus.

So, why do I continue to walk? I walk because someone is living with this cruel disease who received the same diagnosis as I did but is not able to walk…I walk for YOU! 

I walk for all the lupus warriors who feel alone and unsupported...Know that you are not alone, and I walk with you and for YOU!

I walk to raise awareness, as well as to educate others who have never heard of this cruel mystery called lupus! Most of all, I walk to raise much-needed funds for research to help find a cure for this cruel, invisible disease called lupus, so no one will ever have to experience the physical and mental toll that this horrible disease has on the mind, body, and soul.

Although I am living with chronic pain every day, I’m thankful every day to be able to put one foot in front of the other and walk to raise awareness. I’m determined not to let lupus win!
