Thirty-One Faces of Hope: Ashley Washington

The lupus community includes people living with lupus, friends, family and supporters across Georgia. For Lupus Awareness Month, we would like to highlight some of our lupus heroes and champions.

Ashley Washington

Hi, I’m Ashley. I’ve been living with lupus since 2013. Lupus has changed my life drastically. Aside from daily joint pains, skin breakouts, and lupus flares, I’m constantly going to the doctor, getting lab work, and taking over six pills a day. Additionally, I’m a new mom to a one-year-old son, named Jase. Having Lupus made it difficult for me to conceive, so we are thankful for our little miracle after years of trying. Lupus and raising a child have their challenges but I am extremely grateful for my husband and support system for assisting me through this journey.

The Lupus Foundation of America, Atlanta Chapter has assisted me with coping with the many challenges associated with having lupus. I am a member of the Southside support group. This group meets quarterly to support and build strength among all those who attend. This group is a great support system for those who feel they are in the fight alone.

Supporting the foundation's effort to raise awareness to end this terrible disease brings me great joy.  For the last eight years, my team- Team Ashley has raised nearly $3,000 during the Walk to End Lupus Now event. My goal this year is to raise $1,000. We also participate in the Atlanta chapter's annual walk day.

Life is precious and it is important to choose the good in every situation. Although having lupus is my new norm, I make a conscious effort to experience a purposeful life and enjoy all of its benefits regardless of the obstacles I may face each day with dealing with Lupus. Below are a few scriptural affirmations that keep me motivated:

God is within her, she will not fall;... Psalm 46:5

The race is not to the swift, Nor the battle to the strong...But time and chance happen to them all. Ecclesiastes 9:11

So do not fear, for I am with you... I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10

...With his stripes, we are healed. Isaiah 53:5
