Celebrating Men’s Health Month 2025: Honoring Men with Lupus

This June, we recognize Men’s Health Month by honoring the strength, challenges and lived experiences of men with lupus. Lupus is often overlooked and misunderstood in men – leading to stigma, delayed diagnoses and a lack of tailored support. By highlighting the unique impact of lupus on men and providing resources designed specifically for them, we are empowering men to seek answers, find support and live boldly with lupus.
Lupus can affect anyone, but for men – who make up about 1 in 10 of those diagnosed – the journey can have extra challenges. Because there is an incorrect belief that lupus only occurs in women, men may face stigma, delays in diagnosis and a lack of support. Yet research shows that men with lupus are more likely to experience more severe complications from the disease, including kidney disease, heart issues and blood clotting problems.
Despite these risks, men’s symptoms are often overlooked. That’s why it’s critical to have information that speaks directly to their experience. Our resource for men breaks down common symptoms, addresses harmful myths and encourages self-advocacy. By recognizing lupus in men and sharing accurate information, we can help shorten the path to diagnosis, care and support.
Building Community Through Support
Many men with lupus have never met someone else living with the disease – and that isolation can take a toll. That’s why the Lupus Foundation of America created the Lupus Man Cave, a national virtual support group made just for men. Led by trained facilitators who live with lupus themselves, the Lupus Man Cave offers a safe space for real talk, honest connection and encouragement. We also offer support groups by state and topic, so everyone can find a group that meets their needs and comfort level.
Exploring the Male Journey with Lupus
Later this month, we hosted a Lupus & You virtual education event focused on The Male Journey with lupus. The virtual event featured real stories, expert insight and practical tips on everything from navigating the health care symptoms to emotional well-being. It also reinforced something we know to be true: When men have access to the right resources, support systems and understanding, they can manage lupus with strength and confidence.
Shared Stories from Men with Lupus
Throughout Men’s Health Month, we’ve shared stories and insights from men who live with lupus – highlighting their strength, vulnerability and leadership in the community. We began with Jim, whose Your Life with Lupus spotlight opened up about his diagnosis and the impact it’s had on his daily life. We continued the conversation with first-person reflections from men across the country. Our Lupus Man Cave facilitators shared their experiences through a “Get to Know Me” carousel, showing the power of peer support and the importance of finding community. A special Fact Friday post broke down what makes lupus in men different and why awareness matters. And finally, we closed the month with Ndumiso’s powerful personal story, reminding us that behind every diagnosis is a voice that deserves to be heard.
