Medical Director

Dr. Susan Manzi is the Medical Director for the Lupus Foundation of America and member of the Board of Directors. She served as Board Chair from June 2018 - June 2021.

Dr. Manzi is currently Professor of Medicine and Chair of the Medicine Institute at Allegheny Health Network, Pittsburgh, PA. She also serves as Director of the Lupus Center of Excellence in the Autoimmunity Institute. 

Dr. Manzi received her MD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She completed her medical Internship and Residency at Duke University and returned to Pittsburgh where she completed her Fellowship in Rheumatology and received her Masters of Public Health (MPH) from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. 

Dr. Manzi is recognized as an outcomes and translational investigator focused on cardiovascular disease in systemic lupus erythematosus and in the discovery of biomarkers for lupus diagnosis, monitoring, and stratification. She has published over 250 scientific reports and book chapters and is inventor of the cell-bound complement activation products (CB- CAPs) technology platform for which she holds more than 20 patents. The CB-CAPs technology has been licensed by Exagen Inc. and is now available across the country to enhance diagnosis of lupus. Her research program has received multi-million dollars in support from many organizations including the NIH, and the Department of Defense. Dr. Manzi has served on Advisory Boards for the FDA and more than 20 pharmaceutical and biotech companies and has chaired or served on numerous NIH study sections and data safety monitoring boards. She has supported more than 100 graduate and post graduate trainees and was recognized by the NIH for her excellence in mentoring.
