Sreshtha S. - Diagnosed at age 33
It took almost nine long years to be diagnosed with lupus. Initially, I had half of my face, nose and lips with severe cuts and bleeding. I had body pains and high fevers. I met with many doctors who gave me many medications.
It was tough going back to the office for the first time since taking a long leave. I kept thinking how I will face everyone, what they would think, and how they would react. But I’m so happy to share with you all that my family and friends were my strength. Nobody in my office made me feel offended. Everything was the same.
I am working in aviation as maintenance staff of an aircraft with physical, mental and environmental challenges. One year ago, I met a doctor and she asked me to do a biopsy and many more tests, which finally diagnosed me with lupus. I started with HCQ which really helped reduce flare ups, bleeding and pain. She recommended many more doctors to follow up with. But one more thing that helped me in my journey was physical activity. Dance and karate not only gave me strength but also so much positivity.
Two doctors had recommended that I quit my job and get bed rest, but I’m still working each day and I’m getting better and stronger. I shared my story not to mislead anyone as everyone might have different symptoms and problems. Listen to your doctors but most importantly, keep yourself positive and strong. My family and friends stood by me and kept me motivated. If I had quit my job, I’d be depressed. I might have to live with this lifelong, but it has made me more beautiful and stronger. I hope my story will help someone get a little more motivated. I strongly recommended being patient with your doctor. Keep living, rocking and go purple!
