Shelby M. - Diagnosed at age 21
It took a few months and some initial testing for the complete diagnosis. Symptoms ranged from muscle & joint pain to pleurisy to headaches & fatigue, fever, sensitivity to sun & major, hair loss. Although the symptoms were broad, they were very severe. I remember feeling so sick the summer of '22 that I could barely get out of bed. My current symptoms are skin rashes, muscle and joint pain, tenderness, headaches, fatigue, & oral/mouth lesions.
Lupus has impacted my daily life in many ways that people on the outside do not see. Some days, I'm mentally & physically exhausted before the day even begins. I've had to learn to slow down, rest, and understand that it's okay to take breaks! The most frustrating part is trying biologics, they work, and then they are not affordable.
Although it's been challenging, I have the best support system and know that God has a plan for me! My dad gives me hope, as he has had lupus for 24 years. He encourages me to keep pushing everyday, no matter the severity of the flare.
My advice to others with lupus is to give yourself some grace & remember the diagnosis doesn't define you. Learn to ask for help and surround yourself with your people.
