Nya O. - Diagnosed at age 12

My lupus journey began at age 12 in rural South Georgia, where access to rheumatology care was extremely limited. I went months without answers as I experienced severe fatigue, weight loss, swelling, and joint pain so intense that even the slightest touch felt unbearable. My mother and grandmother often carried me during flares when my legs could not support me. My father encouraged me daily, reminding me that even at my weakest, I was still strong.
When I was finally able to see a pediatric rheumatologist hours away, her compassion and patience changed my life. She made me feel seen in a way I had never been before, and she is the reason I chose to pursue medicine. Her example sparked my dream of becoming a pediatric rheumatologist, so I can help children who are scared, hurting, and searching for answers—just as I once was.
Growing up with lupus shaped every part of my life. In college, my roommates and best friend help walk or carry me to class during flares when even taking a few steps felt impossible. My pediatric infusion nurse remained “one call away” even after I transitioned to adult care. Today, my adult rheumatologist, along with her amazing MA, continue to advocate for me, stay ahead of my needs, and support me through the complex challenges of training to become a physician while managing a chronic illness.
My journey expanded when I met my husband, Rashad, who was diagnosed with lupus in 2014 while playing college football after severe fatigue, swelling, and unexplained weight loss. Together, we found strength in shared understanding and faith. As Team Bold Believers, we have participated in multiple Lupus Foundation of America walks in Atlanta and Augusta, raising awareness and honoring our journeys.
On September 20, 2025, we were married in a purple butterfly–themed wedding that I designed intentionally to honor lupus awareness. Every detail—from the colors to my custom dress—was a celebration of survival, advocacy, and the love that carried us through our hardest moments.
Today, I am a soon-to-be M.D. pursuing pediatric rheumatology and sharing my journey to raise lupus awareness and inspire hope. Lupus has given me purpose and a voice I’ll use for life. Stay connected with my journey on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook at Dr. Nya OG.
