L'Mekka E. - Diagnosed at age 29

My Lupus & Kidney Journey
By: L’Mekka | Lupus Warrior | Dialysis Fighter | Caregiver | Business Owner
There are some battles you never see coming, and lupus was one of mine.
I was diagnosed in 2008, and since then, my life has been a constant fight between faith and fatigue, strength and surrender.
In 2018, lupus attacked my kidneys. By 2021, I started dialysis.
Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I sit for hours while a machine does what my body can’t. Some days I leave weak, lightheaded, or in pain. I’ve passed out more times than I can count. I’ve fallen, hit my head, bruised my knees, but I keep getting back up.
And while I fight for my health, I still work 10-hour days as a police officer.
I’m building a business as a certified personal trainer and credit consultant.
And I’m taking care of my mom, who’s living with dementia.
There are days my body says “rest,” but life doesn’t give me that luxury.
So, I push through, not because I’m a superhuman, but because I still believe in my purpose.
This journey has taught me what real strength looks like. It’s not loud or glamorous, it’s quiet, persistent, and full of grace.
It’s showing up to dialysis after a full day’s work.
It’s praying through the pain.
It’s smiling through exhaustion because someone else needs my light.
I’m sharing my story because I need support, and because someone out there needs hope.
I’m praying for a kidney transplant and for the day I can say, “I made it through.”
Until then, I’ll keep showing up.
I’ll keep building.
I’ll keep believing.
Because my story isn’t over, it’s still being written. 💜
