Dr. Annette Shelby, Lupus Advocate
The lupus community mourns the loss of Dr. Annette Shelby, a dedicated advocate, passionate supporter of lupus research, and cherished member of the Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) family. Dr. Shelby passed away peacefully at her home in Alabama on July 23, 2025, at the age of 86.
Diagnosed with lupus in 1987, Dr. Shelby turned her personal battle into a lifelong mission to support others facing the disease. She served in many roles with the LFA, including Board Member, Gala Ambassador, and trusted friend. Her leadership, courage, and unwavering advocacy helped shape the future of lupus research.
Dr. Shelby and her husband, former Senator Richard Shelby, have long been steadfast allies of the lupus community. Together, they championed awareness, research, and funding efforts, helping to generate millions in funding for lupus programs and becoming an integral part of the LFA’s progress over the decades.
At an LFA gala in 2004, Dr. Shelby said, “I’m here tonight because of modern medicine, because of the support from my family, because of the grace of God.”
Dr. Shelby lived with purpose, always striving to make a difference. Her legacy will continue to inspire all of us in the fight against lupus.
The Lupus Foundation of America is deeply grateful for her contributions and honored to have called her a friend. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Senator Shelby and the entire Shelby family during this time of great loss.
