In a new study, preterm birth (PB) and low birth weight (LBW) were strongly associated with a woman’s lupus disease activity at conception. Controlled disease activity at conception is important for positive pregnancy outcomes. Women with lupus who are planning to become pregnant should monitor and control their disease activity in order to limit risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Using the SLE Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI), the rate of lupus low disease activity state (LLDAS) attainment, complement levels, and the titer of anti-double stranded DNA (dsDNA) antibody as disease activity parameters, researchers assessed data from 60 pregnancies of 45 women with lupus in Japan. They analyzed clinical background data, including age, length of time with lupus disease, autoantibody profiles, disease activity scores and factors, and the treatments received before and during pregnancy. The data was compared against PB and LBW outcomes. Investigators found that women with higher disease activity factors in the first trimester were more likely to experience to PB and LBW.
