Jami T. - Diagnosed at age 15
My lupus diagnosis happened as a Sophomore in high school, after months of doctor's visits and spending an entire summer sick with pleurisy and pneumonia. It was rough as I had to miss drivers ed classes, marching band camp, and cancel a family vacation to Disney.
My biggest symptoms that I've been dealing with have been flares of pericarditis, arthritis, and major fatigue. In addition, my body can't handle illnesses as well as others and viruses/colds can be tough to get through.
With the help and support of my rheumatologists, family, and friends I was able to get my bachelor's degree in chemical engineering and moved to the east coast to work as a full time process engineer.
I've learned that new symptoms can come and go. I was ten years in when I saw my first skin-involvement. Currently my biologic is helping me immensely along with a good diet and exercise and plenty of sleep. I've learned to recognize my triggers and know my limits. Don't be afraid to ask for help or support.
