Alana W. - Diagnosed at age 28
My story began with my mom, who was diagnosed after suffering a massive stroke when I was just 2 years old. Throughout my childhood, hospitals became a familiar place as she fought through seizures, strokes, and dialysis. Lupus, as we knew it, meant enduring extreme highs and lows, from watching her fingers, toes, and nose turn blue in the cold to the struggles she faced with sunlight.
Despite these challenges, my mom embodied strength and resilience, becoming my greatest role model. The pinnacle of our journey together came when I was able to give her the gift of life—a kidney—freeing her from dialysis and granting her 7 more precious years. During this time, she walked me down the aisle at my wedding and celebrated the births of all my children.
Being her daughter remains my greatest honor, shaping everything I am and do. She taught me the true meaning of courage and perseverance, inspiring me to share our story with others fighting this cruel disease.
