Lupus Foundation of America named 2017 Distinguished Advocacy Organization
We are honored that the Foundation was selected to receive the Paul G. Rogers Distinguished Organization Advocacy Award from Research!America for our efforts to rally stakeholders and elevate lupus on the nation’s healthcare agenda so it will receive the attention and research funding it deserves. These efforts have helped stimulate millions of dollars in new and expanded funding for lupus basic, clinical, epidemiological and translational research.
Research!America's 21st annual Advocacy Awards honors outstanding advocates for research whose contributions to health and medicine have saved lives and improved quality of life for patients worldwide. The Awards event will take place on Wednesday, March 15, 2017, in Washington, DC. Research!America president and CEO Mary Woolley said in a press release, "The honorees announced today have devoted their leadership talents, relentless energy and expert advocacy to drive medical progress forward benefiting patients and families worldwide. We are delighted to celebrate their efforts in advancing our nation's commitment to research and innovation."
Additional winners initially announced include Phillip A. Sharp, Ph.D., Institute Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, recipient of the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Award for Sustained National Leadership and Leland H. Hartwell, Ph.D., Nobel Laureate and co-director of the Center for Sustainable Health at Arizona State University's Biodesign Institute and Virginia G. Piper Chair of Personalized Medicine, recipient of the Geoffrey Beene Builders of Science Award. Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the National Institutes of Health, will receive the Legacy Award.
The annual Research!America Advocacy Awards program was established by the Board of Directors in 1996 to honor outstanding advocates for medical, health and scientific research. Research!America is the nation's largest nonprofit public education and advocacy alliance working to make research to improve health a higher national priority. Founded in 1989, Research!America is supported by member organizations that represent the voices of 125 million Americans.
