Inflammation caused by lupus may affect the lungs in many ways. A study in Sweden compared lung disease development of people with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) to the general population. The investigation revealed that people with SLE have six times higher rate of developing lung disease. The researchers emphasized heightened monitoring for pulmonary disease, including interstitial lung disease, early within the SLE disease course or at the time of diagnosis.
