Researchers examined the global response to hydroxychloroquine and COVID-19 and identified insights to help guide future decisions, prevent premature action and promote informed and equitable responses in the event of another public health crisis.

Given the challenges that emerged amidst the current pandemic, the study authors identified the following needs to enhance global preparedness and resilience moving forward:

• Rapid health care response and collaboration across fields and international borders guided by evidence-based and high-quality research
• Establishment of transparent guidelines to evaluate and allocate emerging treatments in an ethical, evidence-based manner
• Proactive communication of research findings to the public, clearly outlining study limitations and quickly disseminated to address and combat misinformation
• Clear communication and accurate messages around emerging therapies and avoidance of premature advocacy

This past summer, the Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) contributed to this research by conducting a survey on the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on people with lupus. The survey highlighted access challenges in filling hydroxychloroquine prescriptions for managing lupus.
