Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms experienced by people living with systemic lupus (SLE). Understanding how specific variables (underlying factors) contribute to fatigue is important so new therapies can target these variables and ultimately improve fatigue. A recent study published in Lupus evaluated the contribution of six variables (disease activity, insomnia, depression, stress, pain and physical health) to fatigue in people with SLE who do not have fibromyalgia. The results show that stress, depression and pain are the largest contributors to fatigue among people with SLE. Clinical trials and clinicians should evaluate and measure these variables since they play a significant role in fatigue. The results suggest that evaluating and treating stress, depression and pain may lead to improved fatigue. Learn more about strategies for managing fatigue and other variables of living with lupus.
