This picture is of me as a toddler sitting on my grandfather’s lap. We called him Papu because one of my older cousins couldn’t pronounce Grandpa. He was a mechanic at one point (note how strong his hands look, even at 71) and managed the production line at a sporting goods factory for a couple of decades. At the time of this picture, he was sitting in his favorite chair because he was suffering from lupus and battled a constant fatigue.
Pictures like the one above, and some family stories, are my only memories of him. Lupus took away his chance to be a grandfather and my chance to know him. And we are not making the progress we need to in order to find a cure; in the nearly 45 years since he passed away, there only has been one drug developed specifically to treat lupus.
Which is why I am so proud of the opportunity I have with the Lupus Foundation of America. I joined the LFA in September as the Regional Director for Southern California. We accelerate lupus research and also push boundaries to improve life now for the millions living with lupus. We work to support the estimated 1.5 million Americans living with lupus.
I am asking for your help before the end of the year. I am raising funds to advance our research and programs here in Los Angeles. Gifts of any amount are appreciated and recurring, monthly gifts are especially valuable.
As always, I’m happy to talk! Email me at [email protected] or call me at (310)560-4587.
