I saw Lupus every day for the last 25 years every time I looked at my mother. Every painful step, every silent tear she shed, I felt her pain. When my mother was first diagnosed, I didn’t fully understand the complications that lupus brings. As I watched her struggle with this disease through the years, her courage and strength, right up to the end, amazed me. My mother lost her battle with lupus on May 12, 2015.
When we first decided to walk in this event, we were doing it as a way to lift her spirits and encourage her to fight. There were many times when she would feel hopeless and times when she would think she couldn’t go on, but her strength and determination led her over every hurdle; her bright smile kept her from the dark. While we now walk in her memory, we know that she would want us to keep fighting so that others do not suffer as she did. She would want us to tell those who are battling lupus right now, that they are not alone in this fight, that there will be good days and bad days but to focus on the good. She would want to tell you to hold on to the people who love you as they will be there to hold you up when you don’t have the strength to stand on your own. We walk this walk for my mom and for every person who battles with lupus every day. My father, brother, sister-in-law, niece, daughters, family and friends, we walk for her and we walk for you. For every step that causes pain, for every silent tear shed, we walk for hope. We walk to end Lupus.
