Description: Shivani Garg, MD, Medical Director at the UW-Madison Lupus & Lupus Nephritis Clinics, discusses Lupus Self-Management Tools. In this presentation, Dr. Garg will outline common lupus characteristics and triggers, how to avoid them, and how to self-monitor lupus flares. The presentation will also discuss behavioral tips to avoid triggers, and medications that aid in treatment. By incorporating self-monitoring practices and increasing stress-reduction and mindfulness activities, lupus patients can increase positive outcomes and better manage their disease.
Presenter: Dr. Shivani Garg is a faculty member in the Division of Rheumatology within the Department of Medicine, University of Wisconsin. She was recognized for multiple academic awards in medical school including a scholarship and eight awards in honor of achieving the highest rank in her medical school. During her training at Emory University, she was selected for the best speaker award at the annual Georgia Society of Rheumatology meeting. Dr. Shivani Garg established the first lupus clinic in Wisconsin and the nation’s fifth multidisciplinary lupus nephritis clinic at UW Health, with the goal of providing comprehensive health care to patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus). Her research focuses to better understand the pathophysiology of lupus and to improve outcomes and reduce disparities in lupus through clinical research, including the development of interventions to improve adherence to the pivotal therapies and examining early predictors of poor clinical outcomes including cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease progression in lupus and lupus nephritis.
