Teaming Up in Hartford to End Lupus
Dr. Barbara Edelheit knows all too well the importance of spreading awareness about lupus in Connecticut. As a leading pediatric rheumatologist at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, she sees firsthand the critical need for research, education, and resources for those living with lupus.
Seeing many young people suffer from the brutal impact of lupus is one of the reasons why Dr. Edelheit joined forces with the Lupus Foundation of America. Lupus tends to be more aggressive and severe in children and those who are diagnosed in childhood are also more likely to have higher rates of organ damage than people diagnosed as adults.
Dr. Edelheit took initiative by leading the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center team for the 2018 Walk to End Lupus Now Greater Hartford. The team comprised of doctors and clinical staff from the rheumatology and nephrology departments as well as patients has one goal – powering up against lupus. Through Dr. Edelheit’s outstanding leadership, the team raised nearly $4,000! On top of her daily practice responsibilities, Dr. Edelheit went above and beyond to rally the troops within the hospital by sending out emails to recruit team members and donations, posting up Walk fliers in offices, and truly led by example, personally raising over $2,000. The Connecticut Children’s Medical Team is back on board for 2019 and hopes to expand their reach! Dr. Edelheit shares “it is important to me to participate in the WTELN to help raise funds and awareness of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus with a particular focus on childhood lupus. For the past 20 years in my role as a Pediatric Rheumatologist, I have seen my patients struggle with both the disease and the side effects of the medications used to treat lupus. While I am constantly impressed at the positive attitude and approach taken by the kids and their families, I long for a day when we can cure lupus and allow these kids to lead lives free from this disease.”
Not only is Dr. Edelheit a fearless Team Captain, she also dedicates her time to volunteer on the WTELN Planning Group. Dr. Edelheit and the Planning Group members work on making connections within the Greater Hartford area through sponsorships, walk promotion and recruitment of teams and volunteers to further the Lupus Foundation’s mission of a life free of a lupus. Join Dr. Edelheit and the team at the 2019 Walk to End Lupus Now on June 2 at Pratt & Whitney Stadium: http://walktoendlupus.org/cthartford.
