With your doctor’s approval, exercise can be a great tool for dealing with lupus symptoms. Sometimes, however, traditional exercises—such as an aerobics class or weight training—can be difficult while dealing with swollen joints and fatigue. “Yoga, tai chi, and Pilates can be very useful for those with lupus,” says Stacy Ardoin, M.D., assistant professor of medicine at Ohio State University. “I recommend exercise to all my patients at the lupus clinic, and yoga, tai chi, and Pilates can promote stress reduction, flexibility, and endurance. We are very excited to be able to offer free gentle yoga, tai chi and mindful meditation classes for people with lupus and one caregiver or support person. The yoga and tai chi classes are seated/chair supported; attendees wanting to add more intensity to their sessions are welcome to bring a yoga mat to do some of their exercises on the floor. *Mindful Meditation class will not be held in January. We are looking for an instructor to take over leading the classes. If you, or anyone you know, are certified to lead the class and interested in working with us to offer this class, please contact Debbie Campbell.
COST IS FREE BUT REGISTRATION FOR FIRST CLASS IS REQUIRED. After initial registration, the classes are drop-in. In case of inclement weather, check our Chapter Facebook page.
If you are a caregiver of an adult or child with lupus who would like to attend class but will not be attending with the person you are caring for who has lupus, please contact Debbie Campbell.
These classes are open to people with lupus and one caregiver or support person. You must be 16 or older to participate and if you are under the age of 18, written parental consent is required. Please:
- Check with your doctor prior to starting this or any other exercise program.
- Arrive at least 5 minutes before class which begins promptly at 6:30 PM.
- Do not bring children to class.

Pam’s yoga journey began in the late 1990s when she started practicing yoga to relieve stress. Her yogic journey continued in 2003 as she completed All People Yoga Center’s Hatha Yoga teacher’s certification program. Pam is a certified and Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga teacher at the 200 level. During her yogic journey, Pam has practiced and taught several different styles of yoga including Bikram, Hot Vinyasa, advanced and intermediate Vinyasa and Restorative. Her yoga passion is rooted in the Iyengar style, which she has studied since 2003. Iyengar focuses on proper alignment of the body in yoga postures. Pam has studied with internationally known Iyengar teacher Lois Steinberg. Pam has also studied with Iyengar teachers Jyoti Hansa, Aaron Fleming, Steve Jacobson, Arun, and Kofi Busia. Pam has taught Yoga in both corporate and studio settings.
Bonnie is a licensed occupational therapist with 50+ years of experience. Bonnie's interest in alternative forms of medicine for pain and stress reduction began with training in transcendental meditation. Integrating meditation in her clinical treatments enhanced individual wellness goals. While visiting her daughter in China in 2003, she was invited to participate in a daily tai chi session in a nearby park. Not only was the experience energizing with its slow rhythmic motions but also very meditative. Desiring to add this to her treatment modalities, she had her initial training in 2005 in the Sun style. The Sun style's movements are described as flowing smoothly like water in a river. In 2009 she was certified with Paul Lam's Arthritis Foundation's Instructor's/Leader's Course. Tai chi can be practiced seated or standing depending upon the practitioner's preference. Tai chi has been proven to improve balance, flexibility, cognitive, cardio vascular and pulmonary systems and reduce pain. She continues to integrate tai chi in her treatment plans with successful outcomes........and patient enjoyment.
