Life is full of transitions, and one of the most significant transitions happens when our children get ready to leave high school and go out in the world as young adults.
It’s an exciting time, but for young women with a chronic disease like lupus, the transition to adulthood can be a challenging one. They may face a number of changes that impact their health including changes in insurance, transitioning from a pediatric to an adult specialist, managing medications on their own, and coping with stress.
I have seen far too many young women with lupus drop out of college, put full-time work on hold, and get much sicker as they struggle to successfully manage the complexities of this disease on their own.
It has been my dream for many years to have a retreat for young women with lupus to help them successfully transition into adulthood and thanks to the generous financial support of our donors, that dream became a reality this summer when we launched Transitions, a retreat for young women with lupus.
It was an inspiring day as the women in attendance met others who were experiencing the same challenges and learned they were not alone. They gained the knowledge and support they need as they begin college, career, dating, starting a family, or whatever the future holds.
Transitions is an extension of our popular Summer Jam Youth Retreat, a free summer camp for girls ages 12-19 with lupus. As these girls age out of camp, they still want to stay connected and informed about managing lupus as they transition to adulthood.
Today we are launching our 2019 Year-End Campaign. Our goal is to expand our programming to help even more people living with lupus connect with others and know they are not alone. There is so much more we could do but need your help to make that happen.
Please make a special year-end donation of $25, $50, $100 or whatever you can afford to help us make a real and lasting impact in the lives of those who are affected by lupus. We simply can’t do it without you.
