He didn't know that he could develop lupus
I heard that only women develop lupus. So, I was shocked when my doctor told me I had lupus! That's when I learned that lupus can affect anyone.
I still struggle with my illness and am concerned that it may some day not allow me to work and take care of my family. Some days this stress makes my lupus worse.

I am not the face of lupus. I am a young man -- and a former football player -- who was in perfect health until I was diagnosed with lupus in 2005.
The only way I could describe my symptoms was that I ached so bad that it felt like I had just played a full 60 minute game. Thankfully I had a wonderful primary care doctor who was able to give me the diagnosis within 2 months. Since then it has not been easy. I have had many health problems, but I never see myself as a sick person. My family, especially my wife, my friends, my doctors and my faith has helped me in ways that I may never have tapped into save for this illness.
Today my wife and I are expecting our first child in July. I am on chemotherapy for renal involvement and I run a restaurant with my brother. I take lots of pills, and I go to the gym. I have learned at this early age how important little things are, taking time, listening to others, enjoying the moment, being with those I love and doing what I love. I pray for better treatment for all of us who have this complex disease.

Determination has kept me going all of these years after not being diagnosed for many years. Knee replacements have not held me back as I do continue to walk and exercise. Respiratory problems are with me more than anything else but I am not a quitter.
