Ten Thousand Villages Dedicated Shopping Night
NOVEMBER 20, 2009
5 pm to 8 pm
1941 S 1100 East (Sugarhouse Area)

Help reduce poverty and support artisans around the world without leaving Salt Lake! At the same time, support the Utah Chapter and get your holiday shopping done by purchasing unique, fairly traded handicrafts like Christmas ornaments and nativities, jewelry and personal accessories, furnishings, children's toys and gift items, made by artisans in developing countries. As a thank you to the Lupus Foundation of America, Utah Chapter for our support, Ten Thousand Villages will donate a percentage of sales during the event to us!

Ten Thousand Villages is a nonprofit store whose mission is to provide vital, fair income to Third World people by marketing their handicrafts and telling their stories in North America. The vision is that one day all artisans in developing countries will earn a fair wage, be treated with dignity and respect, and be able to live a life of quality.

By supporting the work of Ten Thousand Villages, you can join international trade that benefits both artisans and shoppers -- and on November 20, the Utah Chapter and people suffering with lupus in our community, too.  Handicraft sales also allow many artisan groups to support their own community development and education programs.  Fair trade allows diverse cultures from around the world to continue to create traditional handicrafts.

Thank you to Ten Thousand Villages and you, our members. Together we can make a tangible impact on those affected by lupus in our community and support artisans around the world.

SOCIAL BUTTERFLIES*
Social Interaction / Support
1st Wednesday of Month, 6:30 p.m.
at Red Robin 1313 Foothill Dr, Salt Lake City

Our Social Butterfly group is a non-mediated, casual gathering where lupies and/or their loved ones can gather to talk, get to know one another, share stories, and make friends. Sometimes it helps to share your experiences with people who really "get it"!

EDUCATION
Speaking Engagements
Any time, any place

Since it can take years for lupus patients to be diagnosed correctly, it is of profound importance that we spread the word. We are working on providing more public and professional speaking engagements. Consider educating your own local office, neighborhood, church, club, friendship circle, rotary group, youth group, sorority, or extended family by having the Utah Chapter provide a speaker to discuss lupus and/or the impact of chronic illness. Or call the Utah Chapter to learn about how you can become a lupus advocate!

Curious Tidbits:

*Why Social BUTTERFLIES? The photosensitive malar rash connected to lupus is shaped like a butterfly across the skin and cheeks. Now referred to as discoid lupus, these lesions were illustrated in Austrian dermatologist Ferdinand von Hebra's "Atlas of Skin Diseases," published in 1856.

The systemic nature of the disorder was recognized by Kaposi in 1872 and symptoms included arthritis, fever, weight loss, anemia, and central nervous system involvement.

In both systemic lupus (SLE) and discoid lupus the same auto-immune activity is at work. Some people develop only one of these forms of lupus, while a small percentage of patients develop both.

Now you know!
