Lupus Now: Entering a New Paradigm
Many barriers have stood in the way of progress to advance the science and medicine of lupus, and increase public understanding of the disease and its impact. The Lupus Foundation of America is working to overcome them. Our efforts have brought the field to the beginning of a new paradigm for lupus research, education and awareness.
Fortunately, the old paradigm -- ineffective treatments due to the lack of a robust research effort, late diagnosis, and a lack of public understanding – is changing. Science is beginning to uncover answers, the public is starting to pay attention to the needs of people with lupus, and we are entering a new era in lupus. There is reason for hope that did not exist just a few years ago.
Because of all of these developments, we are entering a new era where people with lupus can look forward to a renewed quality of life.
The time to Take Action for Lupus is Now
We need a full arsenal of new safe, more tolerable, and effective treatments. We must be able to tailor treatment to the individual with lupus, and, perhaps, stop disease activity completely, allowing them to return to the quality of life they had before lupus. We as a community need to do everything possible to keep the momentum going until we finish the job and find the cure.
