About the Lupus Foundation of America, Inc.

Mission Statement and Programs Objectives

The Lupus Foundation of America, Inc. (LFA) is the foremost national nonprofit voluntary health organization dedicated to finding the causes of and cure for lupus and providing support, services and hope to all people affected by lupus.

The LFA energetically pursues its mission through five program objectives:

  • Provides direct financial support to researchers through LFA's own national research program, Bringing Down the Barriers
  • Advocates for increased public and private sector support for research on lupus
  • Translates research findings into medically sound information and programs for people with lupus, their families, physicians, and other health professionals
  • Heightens public awareness of the impact of lupus
  • Supports individuals with lupus, their families and caregivers

Background

The LFA was established in 1977 when local lupus organizations came together to bring national attention and resources to lupus. Since that time, the LFA has evolved into the field’s preeminent nonprofit lupus organization with nearly 300 chapters and support groups nationwide.

The LFA plays a key role in bringing together all stakeholders -- researchers, clinicians, elected officials, policy makers, industry leaders, other national organizations, and people affected by lupus -- to address lupus on the federal, state and local levels.

Research

  • Accelerate the pace of medical discovery on lupus by advancing biomedical, clinical, epidemiological, behavioral and translational research through the Foundation’s national research program, Bringing Down the Barriers
  • Speed development of new, safe, tolerable and effective treatments by stimulating additional private investment in research through collaboration and partnerships with the nation’s pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries
  • Stimulate a greatly expanded federal research effort through the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Department of Defense and other relevant federal agencies

Education and Information

  • Provide people with lupus and their families support, services and hope by disseminating the latest information about living and coping with lupus
  • Improve the diagnosis and treatment of lupus by translating medical findings into medically sound information and programs for physicians and other health professionals
  • Increase support for lupus by raising awareness and educating the public about the impact of the disease
  • Stimulate increased government funding for lupus research, education and services by educating federal, state and local policy makers about lupus
  • Recommend the development and enactment of positive public policies which aid individuals and families affected by lupus and encourage additional private investment in lupus research and treatment

National Network

  • The LFA is the foremost national nonprofit lupus organization with a nationwide network of nearly 300 integrated chapters and support groups that serve 32 states.
  • LFA chapters are partners with the National office as a vital part of one organization and serve as an important arm of a far-reaching national network working to bring an end to this significant and urgent health issue.
  • The LFA and its chapter network employ a comprehensive strategy to address lupus at all levels -- national, state and local -- conducting programs of research, education and advocacy.
  • The LFA also greatly values its partnerships with other national organizations that have an interest in lupus, as well as nearly 100 international lupus groups, to increase public awareness and understanding of lupus worldwide.
