Rules to Rejuvenation

by Phyllis McIntosh

Whatever path you choose toward a healthier you in 2009, there are a few things you should keep in mind:

  • Always keep your doctor in the loop to make sure you're on the right track.

  • Start small and pace yourself. Alternate periods of activity with periods of rest, and build up your expectations gradually over time.

  • Let go of the guilt. If you’re not feeling well, it’s OK to spend a day sleeping or watching movies, says Cindy Coney. "I’ve learned that the world goes on without you. If you can’t go to an event, the event still goes on. When I step back and take care of myself, I’m better for everyone else in my life."

  • If you plan to be outdoors, protect yourself from the sun to avoid triggering a flare. Try to walk, swim, cycle, or garden in the early morning or in the evening.

Remember that there are many ways to get outside yourself and improve your outlook. Take the time to read, listen to music, rent a good movie, or take a relaxing bath with bath oils and candles.
