With support from people with lupus, their families, and caregivers, the LFA leads a national crusade to find a cure for lupus.

15 Questions with ...

The Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) is no longer featuring "live" webchats. The LFA has revised the format -- now in the form of a Q&A. This new format, called "15 Questions with ..." will still feature the nation's leading experts in lupus.

Your Lupus Expert for the March 2010 topic:
Kidney Issues and Lupus

The LFA welcomes Dr. Michael P. Madaio. Dr. Madaio is a graduate of Albany Medical College. He completed his medicine residency at Medical College of Virginia, including a year as chief resident. Following clinical and research fellowships in nephrology at Boston University, he was a research fellowship in immunology at Tufts University studying systemic lupus Erythematosus, with an emphasis on lupus nephritis. He held faculty positions at Tufts University, the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University, before becoming Charbonnier Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia.

In addition to his Chair responsibilities, Dr. Madaio practices nephrology, and has an active laboratory focused on immunology mechanisms of renal disease. He and his colleagues have formed a multidisciplinary group focused on improving the health of lupus patients. Dr. Madaio has served on a variety of advisory boards, editorial boards and committees, including the Lupus Foundation of America, the American Society of Nephrology, and the National Kidney Foundation, and he has been a member of NIH, NKF, AHA and LFA study sections. He has coauthored numerous original publications related to lupus and lupus nephritis, and he is a co-editor of the Rheumatology and the Kidney textbook.
