ZERO IN 50 CAMPAIGN

It has been over 50 years since the FDA approved a new drug for the treatment of lupus! Fifty years is a long time to wait for anything, let alone new more effective treatments for this life-diminishing and life-threatening disease that affects 1.5 million Americans. For more information about the Zero in 50 Campaign launched by the LFAand to learn what you can do to help, please visit www.lupus.org/50years.

LFA's AD COUNCIL CAMPAIGN

The LFA, in conjunction with the Ad Council and the US. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women's Health launched a new lupus ad campaign on April 7th, 2009. The campaign focuses on reaching young women - those most at risk for lupus. For more information about the campaign "Could I Have Lupus", please visit http://www.lupus.org/AdCouncil.

FROM THE CHAPTER BOARD MEMBER

Welcome to our website: A letter from the Board Chair

We are glad to have you checking out our website. Our Executive Director, Anna Tillman, likes to remind us that "We are not alone". Lupus is a complex, mystifying, and frustrating disease. If you or someone you know has lupus, we are here to inform and support you.

We are an all-volunteer organization that provides a local source of lupus educational materials (most are designed by the Lupus Foundation of America's national office). This material is distributed to phyicians, lupus patients, friends and family members of those affected by lupus, and to anyone wanting more information on this disease. Although we cannot make a referral to a specific physician, we do have a current ist of Alaskan phsyicians who treat six or more lupus patients.

Our contact information is listed below (telephone numbers, including an 800 number available within the state of Alaska, and our email address). We are available to people state-wide who have questions or concerns about living with lupus, supporting friends or family members dealing with the disease, and those who want to know more about lupus.

In Anchorage, we provide a Lupus Support Group which meets 9 or 10 times a year at our local office located at 4240 Old Seward Highway (Suite 11) on the third Saturday of the month from 1:00 - 3:00 pm.

We would love to have you as an active, involved member of the LFA Alaska Chapter as well as have your participation in fundraising events so that we can be in touch with more people who have been affected by lupus in our far-reaching state.

Sign up as a member, call for information, or make a donation to the cause. With more than 3,000 lupus patients in Alaska alone, you can see that we have a daunting task facing us to prove to everyone living with lupus that "they are not alone".

Judy Powell, Board Chair
