Cutaneous Lupus Research

Approximately two-thirds of people with lupus will develop some type of skin disease. There are three forms of lupus skin disease, also called cutaneous lupus.  This type of lupus can be disfiguring and greatly impact the quality of life of people with lupus.  There is an urgent need for a better understand the causes and progression of cutaneous lupus as well as improved outcomes for people undergoing treatment.

The Lupus Foundation of America provides start-up funds for new or existing studies whose outcomes will facilitate the development of large-scale studies of cutaneous lupus and help springboard researchers toward better understanding of the underlying causes of cutaneous lupus.  We also support studies that will translate data from previously conducted laboratory studies into clinical research studies that can lead to better diagnosis and treatment of this form of lupus.
