About the Finzi Program

The purpose of the Gina M. Finzi Memorial Student Summer Fellowship Program is to foster an interest among students in the areas of basic, clinical, translational, epidemiological, or behavioral research relevant to lupus under the sponsorship and supervision of an established, tenure-track Principal Investigator who directs a laboratory dedicated at least in part to the investigation of lupus at a U.S. or Canadian academic, medical, or research institution.

Biomedical research on lupus has not kept pace with research efforts put forth to advance knowledge about treatments for other chronic and life-threatening diseases. The Gina M. Finzi Memorial Student Summer Fellowship Program is part of LFA’s ongoing efforts to advance the science and medicine of lupus and bring down the barriers that have impeded progress in lupus research for decades.

History

The Gina M. Finzi Memorial Student Summer Fellowship Program is a memorial tribute to Gina M. Finzi, the late daughter of former LFA President Emeritus Sergio Finzi, Ph.D. Since 1984, the Gina M. Finzi Memorial Student Summer Fellowship Program has supported the work of nearly 200 young investigators.

Over the years, participants in this valued fellowship program have produced numerous publications in respected peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of Immunology, Arthritis & Rheumatism, Lupus, Stroke, and European Journal of Immunology. Some have also earned M.D. or Ph.D. degrees and have become medical practitioners or academic researchers.
