Patients, caregivers, and the medical community are invited to join us for a day devoted to those affected by lupus.  The Annual NC Lupus Summit is the largest educational conference on lupus in the state and provides a variety of discussions led by physicians and other experts dedicated to clueing in on the mystery of lupus.

Keynote Address

Presenter: Cindy Coney

Ambassador of hope and author of The Wild Woman’s Guide to Living with Chronic Illness, Cindy Coney is a nationally acclaimed speaker, trainer, human resilience expert, and philanthropic force. Dedicated to helping both children and adults achieve optimal health and success, Cindy has taught thousands of people to move beyond coping with limitations to recapturing joy and fulfillment in their lives.

Diagnosed with lupus in 1980, Cindy has since driven a racecar 124 miles per hour; completed the Chicago Marathon; championed countless nonprofit organizations; presented to the World Lupus Congress as a keynote speaker; and shared her inspiring, empowering story from Belize to Baltimore. In 26 years as Executive Director of the Mendez Foundation, Cindy pioneered federally recognized educational work in health and prevention that continues to impact the lives of hundreds of thousands of students nationwide. Morning Sessions

Session 1A: CLINICAL TRIALS

Presenter: Dr. Jane Box - Box Arthritis

This session will be audio recorded.

Finding new, safer and more tolerable treatments is important to every individual living with lupus.  Presently, there is no cure for lupus, and no single test to diagnose the disease.  Advances in medical research may improve your future.  Learn about ways you can get involved and help make new treatments for lupus a reality through participation in clinical trials.

Session 1B: UNDERSTANDING LUPUS

Presenter: Dr. Sheetal Vora - Levine Children's Specialty Center

This session is designed for both the newly diagnosed patient and anyone needing a refresher in the basics.   Learn about current, medically accurate information on lupus, its symptoms, treatments and coping techniques.

Session 1C: LUPUS AND DISABILITY

Presenter: Tai Venuti, MPH - Allsup

This educational session will help you navigate the often frustrating and confusing issues surrounding disability.  In Part I of this session, learn what SSDI/SSI is, the qualifications, how to apply, what you need to know to be prepared.  In Part II, discover what you need to know about going back to work with SSDI/SSI.

Session 1D: LUPUS AND OVERLAPPING DISEASE

Presenter: Dr. Charles A. Withers, II, MD - Northeast Rheumatology

This session will be video recorded.

Although lupus most often occurs alone, many people with lupus also have symptoms characteristic of one or more of the other connective tissue diseases.  In this circumstance, a physician may use the term "overlap" to describe the illness.  Learn about several well-recognized overlaps that may affect people with lupus and how they are treated and managed.

Afternoon Sessions

Session 2A: LUPUS AND INTIMACY

Presenter: Diane Parks, NP, Certified Sexuality Counselor

A chronic disease affects both partners in a relationship in many ways, but rarely is intimacy on the list of topics discussed either at the doctor's office or at home.  Having an exhausting and painful chronic illness such as lupus makes it all the more challenging—yet important—to communicate. 

Session 2B: LUPUS AND NUTRITION

Presenters: Dr. Mary Etta Moorachian, Ph.D. & Chef Thomas Carrig, DTR, CSW

Good nutrition is an important part of an overall treatment plan for lupus. Learn how to create a nutritious, well-balanced, and varied diet that takes into account the profound effects of a network as complex as the immune system.        

Session 2C: CHANGES IN HEALTHCARE

Presenter: Susan Royster, Associate Executive Director, NC MedAssist

This session will be audio recorded.

Recent and upcoming changes in our healthcare system are leaving individuals with many questions.T he Affordable Care Act includes many important provisions for people with lupus.  Learn about the health coverage changes, your options to fit your budget and needs, and how to enroll.

Session 2D: LUPUS AND THE CARDIOPULMONARY SYSTEM

Presenter: Dr. Joseph Shanahan - Shanahan Rheumatology & Immunotherapy

This session will be video recorded.

The heart and lungs are frequently affected in people with lupus.  Complications in these organs can cause a variety of problems, ranging from mild to serious or even life-threatening.  Learn about common symptoms and treatments available.
