Lupus Awareness Month

May is Lupus Awareness Month, one of several awareness campaigns promoted by the Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) to increase the visibility of lupus. This year, we are asking the lupus community to join us in helping to bring additional attention to this disease ... attention that lupus deserves and requires. Just think of the impact we could make if everyone with a connection to lupus informed 10 people about the disease!

With that in mind, LFA encourages you -- and your family and friends -- to help spread the word about lupus. Your way.

Here are a few awareness ideas for your consideration.

Send an eCard to 10 friends
Send an informative and interactive eCard to educate others on how lupus affects the body.

Post Fliers in Your Community
Download copies of lupus fliers, and post them in your community: where you work, worship, shop, or have fun.

Wear a Purple Wristband, a Purple Ribbon, or a Lupus Awareness Sticker
If you don’t have a purple wristband, you can purchase them from our online store. Download the template for the lupus awareness sticker (PDF), and encourage your friends and family to wear them in May.

Write a Letter to Your Local News Editor
Share your story and raise awareness of lupus by writing a letter to the editor about how lupus has affected you or a member of your family. Our tool provides guidance on how to write a letter to the editor, facts and statistics you can use in your letter, and allows you to choose your local editor and send a direct email. You can find additional statistics and facts on our website Newsroom.

Follow these steps to send a letter to your editor.

  1. Go to LFA’s Action Center
  2. Under the "Take Action" header, click on the "May is Lupus Awareness Month" link
  3. Enter your zip code
  4. Complete the 2 steps
  5. Once you've completed both steps, click on the "Send Message" button at the bottom of the blue column

Lupus Awareness Email ButtonAdd a Lupus Awareness Button on Your Email Signature
Download the lupus awareness button to the right, by right-clicking, selecting "save picture as ..." and then saving it to your computer. Then add it to your email's auto-signature, by clicking on your email system's version of "insert picture / image." You can even make the image link back to lupus.org website by selecting the image, and then clicking on your email system's "insert hyperlink" tool. Then you simply copy and paste "http://www.lupus.org" (minus the quotes).

"Tweet" on Twitter
If you have a Twitter account, you can "tweet" your Lupus Awareness Month suggestions to us at http://twitter.com/LupusOrg. You might also want to post updates such as "walking to support lupus," "sending lupus awareness eCards to 10 friends," or "texting friends to raise lupus awareness."

Change Your Facebook Status
If you have a Facebook account, consider changing your status to recognize Lupus Awareness Month. Here is an example.

Your Awareness Ideas

"Both my daughter and my sister have lupus. I didn't know much, if anything, before; now I am on a mission to get the word out. I am an Avon representative and will donate the profits from my campaign to the LFA. I include a letter about lupus with all my brochures, which has resulted in an increase in my orders. I also created 100 gift sets to sell for $5.00 each; I have sold more than 80. I feel good knowing I have gotten A LOT more people talking about lupus than there was 2 weeks ago."
