Why I Walk: Claudia Barinas

On Saturday, September 28th, Claudia Barinas will Walk to End Lupus Now for the first time without her daughter, Catalina, who lost her battle with lupus earlier this year at the tender age of 20.  Join Claudia at our last Walk to End Lupus Now event in 2013 being held at Jungle Island in Miami to increase raise funds and awareness of lupus, a cruel and mysterious disease that affects over 100,000 Floridians.

Catalina was only 14 years old when she was hospitalized at Baptist Hospital due to experiencing severe stomach pain, vomiting, joint pain, and fever.  After being attended to by five different specialists, they were unaware of what she had until she developed a butterfly rash – a common symptom of lupus – that they then diagnosed her with this disease.  “I’m at a loss for words to express all my emotions [over losing my daughter]; however, I will say, please continue to fight as I believe one day we will find a cure,” says Barinas.

Catalina is survived by her husband and high school sweetheart, Derek, whom she married less than one year ago.
