This session is designed for both the newly diagnosed patient and anyone needing a refresher in the basics. Learn about current, medically accurate information on lupus, its symptoms, treatments and coping techniques.
Lupus and Intimacy
Presenter: Diane Parks, NP - The Woman's Well
A chronic disease affects both partners in a relationship in many ways, but rarely is intimacy on the list of topics discussed either at the doctor's office or at home. Having an exhausting and painful chronic illness such as lupus makes it all the more challenging—yet important—to communicate.
Lupus and the Skin
Presenter: Dr. Adela Rambi G. Cardones - Duke Dermatology
Two-thirds of individuals with lupus will develop some type of skin disease. This session will focus on the environmental effects, symptoms, prevention methods, and treatment associated with lupus and the skin and other skin-related issues.
Presenter: Debra Eng, MSW, LCSW, LCAS
We know that effective communication between patients and caregivers leads to better health outcomes. You can significantly improve your relationship with your caregiver if you view the relationship as a partnership in which you and your family members are active participants. Learn about the importance of effective communication and how to value your relationships in this session.
Complementary and Alternative Treatments
Presenter: Dr. Evangeline Lausier - Duke Integrative Medicine Center
In addition to medications and traditional medical care from doctors, there is an increased interest in other healing practices to try to improve overall health. These diverse therapies -- used either with conventional medicine (complementary) or instead of conventional medicine (alternative) -- include homeopathy, chiropractic, naturopathy, massage therapy, meditation, and supplements. Learn more about scientific research regarding specific types of complementary and alternative medicine in this session.
