NIH / NIAMS -- The National Institutes of Health is the primary Federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research. The NIH is composed 27 Institutes and Centers. One of the institutes, The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), supports research into the causes, treatment, and prevention of arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases, the training of basic and clinical scientists to carry out this research, and the dissemination of information on research progress in these diseases.

The LFA receive requests from investigators to post information about their current studies in lupus research. They are initiated by the investigator, whereby the investigator has control over the study and its design. Investigator initiated studies must meet the same federal protections for patients as studies posted on clinicaltrials.gov. These studies may or may not be found using CISCRP's clinical trials search engine
