ESPN – Olympic Gold Medalist Gabby Douglas inspires teen with lupus

Thirteen year-old Amarissa Mauricio’s life changed forever when she was diagnosed with lupus in April of 2013. The disease caused multiple infections, an enlarged heart and stage four kidney failure. Fighting for her life, Amarissa’s symptoms were finally considered under control only after a 42 day hospital stay and a six-month course of chemotherapy.

Amarissa had to stop gymnastics when she got sick but had always been a fan of gymnast Gabby Douglas. Last month, the teen had the chance to spend a weekend with the Olympic gold medalist and once again by inspired by the pride and grace of gymnastics. Watch their video now:
